Kansas City’s Face of Social Media
Jeff Smith better known around town and on “the google” as JeffisaGeek. He can be found at JeffisaGeek. He and a group of others started the Kansas City Social media club and within a year they have close to 600 members. He is a little better known than some of the others involved with this group since he was the one who set up and moderates the Ning site for Kansas City Social Media.I have been kind of criticizing people who call themselves social media experts lately for several reasons. One, when a subject is new and evolving are there really experts? A better term might be experienced user. However, while getting ready to interview Jeff for this post I decided to do a Google search on him. He basically owns JeffisaGeek on the internet. Which is exactly what businesses and brands are striving to do. They want to be at the top of Google. Well I had to go all the way to page 8 to find someone else and that even included him as a post on that guy’s blog.[img_assist|nid=198|title=Jeff is a Geek|desc=|link=popup|align=center|width=380|height=336]Jeff is a fairly quite guy in person. I’ve been observing him for a while now which is very typical of how I learn who it is that I decide to trust. For me it’s never about who is the flashiest presentation or personality, it is more about who has the calm demeanor that comes from knowledge. Jeff has that. I never see him telling anyone anything or acting like a know it all. We basically just got to know each other better during this interview which was pretty cool for me. Jeff’s main goal with his use of social media is to be authentic and to share things with others that can help them or make them laugh or just touch them in some way. He sees social media as great way to meet new people. What, shut up you mean really just being social not selling me something. I know, right. But really he is all about just being a laid back kind of guy who wants to be helpful to others and to follow his passion which is to geek out about social media stuff. He really likes finding services or tools that makes using social media easier to use and simplier. He thinks more companies need to embrace social media and not be afraid of it. Here is Jeff’s intro to his blog. His about page on his blog is a video at Jeffisageek tv just cause he decided to be different. You can find out more about Jeff and his wife Allison on his website. Check him out. He’s a nice guy. Maybe you’ll learn something along the way.If you have stories about how Jeff or Social Media club has helped you please feel free to share a comment.
Twitter teaches History….
Dr. Monica Rankin of UT Dallas uses twitter to teach history. Things that make you go Hmmmmm.
Again this is about someone doing something totally opposite of what everyone else is doing. She is standing out. I love this stuff. What I also love is that she states she expected it to be messy but messy isn’t always a bad thing.Coaching Question: How are you using modern technology to reach your audience and increase involvement?Kudos to @kesmit3 for shooting the video. Also love her squirrel videos. Apparently UTD squirrels are the friendliest squirrels around.Twitter Friends
Last Friday started off on a high note. I started my day off at a social media breakfast where I had the great pleasure to meet several awesome people. We talked about twitter from a truly appreciative inquiry standpoint. Even though we never even discussed appreciative inquiry. (for those who already are familiar with Twitter , their twitter names are, they are real genuine people who aren’t out to market to you. It’s safe to say hi to them. @andrewconard @kristendom @i_am_me )We shared our thoughts and ideas all from a, “this is what I know; what do you know; how can we learn more point of view.” It was awesome. I learned a great deal and they challenged me to think about stuff that had never even entered my consciousness. How awesome is that when others contribute to your growth. So Thank you to each of you for helping me be a better person in this world. Thanks my new twitter bff…. Sorry I couldn’t resist I’ve never used that before.
7 Crucial Questions every Business Owner should be asking themselves in today’s economic world.
As a business owner it is of the utmost importance to me that my customers/clients are satisfied with the service or product that I provide. With that priority and value in mind I have to realize that gathering information and feedback from them is crucial for my own knowledge if I am to adjust or maintain what I am doing to meet their expectations. Don’t underestimate your customers expectations. They are a crucial component to your success.
The internet has many tools and methods for customers to give feedback to or about business’s. The business owners who are aware of those methods and utilize them are the ones who will be the leaders of their industries. Facebook recently made some decisions that affected their clients and they are now listening and responding to those clients to manage the situation. http://Facebook Caves to User Gripes Over Redesign
Personally I would rename the article;
“Social Media Leader uses Social Media to Maintain Leadership Position.”
The coach in me is thinking where is the learning experience in all of this. How do you as a small business owner or just an individual utilize social media to pace yourself or listen to feedback?
Here are some questions you should ask.
1) What sites are my customers using? (Facebook, Myspace, other User Review and Recommendation sites)
2)How can you use the sites your customers are using to track what is being said about your company?
3) How do you allow customers to give feedback to you as a business owner so you can respond quickly to a complaint?
4) How do you handle both negative and positive feedback from your customers?
5) What do you do with the information once you have it?
6) What are you doing to move customers from first time buyers into being dedicated loyal customers?
7) How do you engage your customers?
