Twitter Twits: Do’s and Don’ts of first contact.

What marketing book did you read that told you how to piss off your clients during the handshake?Since when do you go to a marketing event with your product and credit card swiper in hand…. But seriously here is the short list of some do’s and don’ts for marketing on twitter. 1. If your first Direct Message (DM) on twitter is a sales pitch you missed the mark, and you just pissed me off and however many followers you have. Do you really think I’m going to buy or read anything from you now?I did shoot off a couple of DM’s myself back to those who are doing such a bad job and here is one response that I actually appreciated. (Hi! Thank you for reviewing our DM, in hindsight it does feel a little pushy 🙂 so hard to write it all in such a small space! Speak soon)  Wow, they actually read my message and thought about it. I think I’ll go follow them again, I like to reward growth. 2. Tricking me or trying. Yesterday someone DM me and said Hey did you send me this link?  Well no I didn’t so here is what I wrote back. (No I didn’t send you that link and now I’m going to stop following you. Bad marketing. Two thumbs down.)  No one likes links that are misleading. No one will listen to you if you don’t have something to say either.  One of my responses was this (Lame marketing with the direct message. Two thumbs down. Link had nothing to do with Vancouver…. I’m no longer following you.) Is your goal to be ignored?I’m a firm believer in focusing on the positive. Back to basics. What did your Mom raise you to do?  Say Hello first. Duh. Lean over here so I can slap your forehead. Here are a few I was impressed with.  Remember what you focus on expands. I want to expand the right way of connecting.Thx 4 follow. If you needed one lesson that would propel you to the next level above, it would be? How can I serve you?Hello and thank you for following meThe winner is:Thx for the follow ! I hope my Design Tweets will interest you or make you smile. Any Shirt design suggestions ? – Dave
